About the engagement rate tool

Enter any public Instagram username to calculate its engagement rate from the account's 12 most recent reels: average likes, average comments, average views and the rate as a percentage of followers, compared with benchmarks for accounts of the same size. Agencies and brands use it to vet influencers before a collaboration; creators use it to track their own performance.

How the engagement rate is calculated

Engagement rate = (average likes + average comments per reel) ÷ followers × 100, measured over the account's 12 most recent reels. Using recent content rather than the whole history reflects how the account performs today, and averaging across 12 reels smooths out one viral hit. Views are shown separately, because adding them to the rate would inflate it for video-heavy accounts.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate?

Engagement falls as accounts grow, so compare like with like. As a rule of thumb: nano accounts under 10K followers average around 4–6%, 10K–100K around 2–3%, 100K–1M around 1–2%, and accounts over 1M often sit below 1%. Anything roughly double the typical rate for the size is strong; well under half of it is a warning sign, especially combined with a follower count that doesn't match the comment volume.

Why engagement rate matters more than follower count

Followers can be bought or inflated by giveaways; likes and comments on recent posts show how many people actually see and react to the content now. A 20K account with 5% engagement reaches more real people per post than a 200K account with 0.3%. Engagement rate is also the first number a brand looks at when pricing a sponsored post.

Instagram engagement rate benchmarks by follower count

FollowersTypical engagement rateStrong
Under 10K~4.5%9% and above
10K – 100K~2.4%5% and above
100K – 1M~1.4%3% and above
Over 1M~0.8%1.6% and above

Indicative industry benchmarks; rates vary by niche and content format. Reels typically earn more views but fewer likes per view than photos.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Instagram engagement rate calculator free?

Yes. You can check accounts without creating an account. The tool runs the same public-data APIs developers use on socialgraph.dev, and you can sign up for 100 free credits to pull the raw data into your own tools.

Does it work for private accounts?

No. Only public accounts expose their posts, so a private account returns no engagement data.

Which posts are included?

The 12 most recent reels on the profile's reels tab, which is where Instagram engagement is concentrated today. Pinned reels, photo-only posts and stories are not included.

Why is the result different from other calculators?

Tools differ in which content they sample (reels, photos or both), how many items, and whether views count. We sample the 12 latest reels, use the mean, and show views separately so you can see the whole picture.

Can I calculate engagement rates for many accounts at once?

Yes, with the API: the Recent posts statistics endpoint returns the averages and follower count behind this tool for 2 credits, so a batch of 100 accounts costs about $0.40.
